IS 8471 the Indian Standard for acetylene generators
IS 8471:2003, Acetylene Generators — Requirements, is the Indian Standard governing the design and construction of acetylene generating plant. It amalgamates the former Parts 1 to 5 into one document, and works alongside IS 14814, the code of safety. KIGL has built generators to it since 1947 and sat on the committee behind it.

What the standard is for
IS 8471:2003, Acetylene Generators — Requirements, is the Indian Standard for the machine that makes acetylene: the vessel and system in which calcium carbide meets water, and the fittings and safety devices around it. The 2003 edition amalgamates what were previously Parts 1 to 5 into a single document.
It sits in a family of four, and buying or running a plant means dealing with all of them:

A plant conforming to the equipment standard but laid out without regard to the code of safety is not a compliant installation, and the reverse is equally true.
Why generators are standardised separately
Most fuel-gas equipment is designed against fire and explosion in air. Acetylene requires something more.
Acetylene can decompose without any air present at all. Beyond certain pressures and temperatures the molecule releases its own stored energy — it does not need an oxidant to do so. That single property is why acetylene plant is built to limits that look conservative next to any other fuel gas, why generation pressure is held low, why heat is taken out of the reaction rather than allowed to accumulate, and why the design of every vessel and pipe run is a safety question rather than a plumbing one.
It is also why copper is excluded from acetylene service. Acetylene forms copper acetylide, a compound that can initiate a decomposition, so copper and high-copper alloys have no place in the gas path.
A standard written for compressed-gas equipment in general addresses none of that. Equipment designed as though acetylene were an ordinary fuel gas is the way generators are destroyed, and that is the gap IS 8471 exists to close.
What this page does not do
It does not reproduce the standard. BIS holds the copyright to Indian Standards and sells the authoritative text, and where compliance is at stake that document is the only thing that counts.
It also does not quote clauses, limits or figures from it. That is a deliberate restraint: a page that paraphrases a requirement it has not verified against the current edition is worse than no page, because it will be believed and then quoted on a tender. What is set out above is what the standard is for and how it relates to the others — the part that is genuinely difficult to work out from a catalogue of numbers, and the part we are asked about every week.
How KIGL builds to it
KIGL has manufactured acetylene generating plant since 1947, and was the first indigenous manufacturer of acetylene gas plant in India. The plants are designed and built at the Kolkata works on Andul Road, to IS 8471, and laid out to the IS 14814 code of safety — the layout is normally what sizes the building, not the equipment footprint.
The design work behind them was carried out within the family that still runs the company, by Devendra Kumar Garg — who served on the BIS committee behind IS 8471 itself, and is named in the committee composition of IS 8198:2004.
That is worth stating precisely, because it is unusual and because it is checkable. The people who drew these plants were in the room when the standard they are built to was written. It is not a claim about quality; it is a statement about where the drawings came from, and about why this site can explain what a standard is for rather than only what number it carries.
What that means when you buy one:
- The plant is designed against a duty, in Nm³/h, not picked off a shelf.
- The layout is drawn against your plot, because the code of safety governs separation and ventilation and those are what fix the building.
- The commissioning engineer travels with the machine, in India and outside it.

IS 8471 — frequently asked questions
What does IS 8471 actually cover?
The generator itself — the vessel and system in which calcium carbide and water are brought together to produce acetylene, and the fittings and safety devices that make that safe to do repeatedly. It is a requirements standard for equipment, which is what separates it from IS 308, a specification for the gas, and from IS 14814, a code of safety for handling acetylene generally. A plant needs all three.
Why do acetylene generators need their own standard?
Because acetylene is not merely flammable — it is capable of decomposing without any air present at all. Raise the pressure or the temperature far enough and the molecule releases its own energy, which is why acetylene plant is designed around limits that would look conservative for any other fuel gas. A standard written for compressed-gas equipment in general does not address that, and equipment designed as though acetylene were ordinary fuel gas is how generators are destroyed.
Is IS 8471 still in parts?
No. Earlier editions ran as IS 8471 Parts 1 to 5, and the 2003 edition amalgamates them into a single document. If you hold a specification, a drawing or a tender clause citing a part number, it is working from the superseded structure — check it against the current edition before you quote it.
Does conforming to IS 8471 mean the plant is certified?
No, and the distinction matters. Building to a standard and holding a third-party type-test certificate against it are different things. KIGL designs and manufactures to IS 8471. Where a certificate exists for a particular item we will send you a copy; where one does not, we do not imply otherwise. Anyone who blurs those two on a tender document is doing you no favours.
What else governs an acetylene plant besides IS 8471?
In practice: IS 14814 for the code of safety and the layout that follows from it, IS 308 for the gas the plant produces, IS 7312 for the cylinders it fills, and IS 11006 for the flashback arrestors at every take-off. Above all of them sit the Gas Cylinders Rules and your PESO licence conditions, which are law rather than standards and are not optional.
