What does KIGL actually manufacture?

Two things. We fill industrial and medical gases into cylinders at our own works, and we design and build acetylene gas plants and safety equipment. The combination is unusual — most gas companies do not build plant, and most plant builders do not operate one daily.

Which areas do you supply?

Cylinder gas is filled at our own works in Guwahati and serves Assam and the North-East directly. Beyond that it reaches customers through our network of agents across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Odisha and other states. Equipment — acetylene plants, flashback arrestors, accessories — ships anywhere in India, including all seven North-East states, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Odisha.

Do you supply liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen?

Yes, both. It is worth being clear about the difference: we manufacture compressed and dissolved gases ourselves at our own filling plants, and we supply liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen sourced from producers, since we do not operate an air-separation unit. Helium we supply rather than manufacture, as no one manufactures helium in India.

How old is the company really?

We began in 1947 as The Industrial Gases Limited, among the earliest industrial gas manufacturers in India. In 1988 the company was divided into several businesses, and The Kamrup Industrial Gases Limited was formed with works at Kolkata, Varanasi and Guwahati. That is seven decades of continuous manufacture, now under the fourth generation of the founding family.

Can you help with PESO licensing and compliance?

For equipment we supply, yes — we provide the drawings and equipment certification needed to support an application under the Gas Cylinders Rules, 2016, and advise on the Calcium Carbide Rules where carbide storage is involved. The licence itself is held by the operator.

We build the plant, and then we run it ourselves

Since 1947 we have designed and built gas plant at Kolkata, and filled cylinders daily on that same equipment at our Noonmati works. What the filling floor teaches us goes back into the next plant we build, and plants we delivered decades ago are still in service. Four generations of the founding family have run these works, and the group holds a seat on the Bureau of Indian Standards gas cylinders committee.
