Nitrous oxide: what it is used for and what a buyer must have in place

Nitrous oxide has 3 distinct roles: an anaesthetic and analgesic gas in medicine, an oxidiser in analytical flames and engines, and a propellant in food. It supports combustion vigorously despite being neither flammable nor an obvious hazard, and its supply is restricted to appropriately licensed buyers.

Three products in one cylinder

Nitrous oxide is unusual in that the same molecule serves three quite separate markets, each with different rules.

Medicine. An anaesthetic and analgesic, usually blended with oxygen — dentistry, obstetrics, emergency care. Medical nitrous oxide is a pharmaceutical product made to the Indian Pharmacopoeia under drug licence. As with medical oxygen, what you are buying is the batch traceability as much as the gas.

Analysis. The nitrous oxide–acetylene flame is a standard atomiser in atomic absorption spectroscopy. It burns hotter than air–acetylene, so it atomises elements a cooler flame cannot reach. Laboratories buying nitrous oxide are usually buying ultra-high-purity acetylene alongside it.

Industry and food. As an oxidiser where a controlled oxygen release is wanted, and as a propellant in food processing.

It is an oxidiser, and people forget

Nitrous oxide does not burn. That is the sentence that gets people into trouble, because the conclusion most people draw from it is wrong.

At temperature, nitrous oxide decomposes and releases oxygen. It makes other materials burn much more readily than they would in air — which is precisely why it works in an AAS flame and in engines.

So it takes oxidiser discipline, not inert-gas discipline:

  • Segregate from fuels and combustible materials in storage, properly separated rather than merely apart
  • No oil or grease on valves, fittings or regulators
  • Keep it away from heat
  • Do not assume that “non-flammable” on a label means “will not contribute to a fire”

Liquid in the cylinder

Like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide is stored as a liquid under its own vapour pressure.

Two consequences: the gauge does not tell you the contents — it reads vapour pressure, which stays roughly constant while liquid remains — so contents are found by weighing against the stamped tare. And fast draw-off chills the cylinder, dropping vapour pressure and flow, so a cylinder can appear to run out while still substantially full.

Who may buy it

Nitrous oxide is a medical gas and a substance subject to misuse. Supply is restricted to buyers who can demonstrate a legitimate use and hold whatever licence that use requires — hospitals, laboratories, and industrial users with a documented application.

Expect a responsible supplier to ask. A supplier who does not ask is telling you something about how they run everything else.
