Gas cylinder valves and outlet connections in India: the IS 3224 outlet for each gas left-hand fuel threads, pin-index valves and valve protection

Indian gas cylinder valves are made to IS 3224:2021, which gives each gas an outlet: oxygen G5/8 right-hand (No. 3), acetylene and hydrogen G5/8 left-hand (No. 2), argon, nitrogen and helium G3/4 right-hand (No. 20), and carbon dioxide a Whitworth 21.8 mm thread (No. 7). Medical cylinders use IS 3745 pin-index valves.

The cylinder valve is the one part of a gas cylinder that the user touches, and its outlet is designed so that the wrong regulator will not fit. In India every industrial cylinder valve, other than for LPG, is made to IS 3224:2021, which gives each gas a numbered outlet with its own thread size, form and hand. Medical cylinders take a different, pin-index valve. Knowing the outlet tells you which regulator fits, and also which gases share a connection and so need extra care.

What IS 3224:2021 covers

IS 3224:2021, the fourth revision, specifies the design, materials, manufacture and testing of valves for refillable steel and aluminium cylinders of up to 1,000 litres water capacity, for permanent, liquefiable and dissolved gases other than LPG. It was aligned in this revision with ISO 10297:2014. It excludes breathing apparatus valves, cryogenic equipment, residual pressure valves, solenoid valves, LPG valves and pin-index valves for medical cylinders.

Rule 4(1) of the Gas Cylinders Rules 2016 sends each cylinder type to its own valve standard: IS 3224 for industrial gases and CNG, IS 3745 for medical cylinders, IS 7302 for breathing apparatus, IS 8776 and IS 8737 for LPG, IS 15100 for automotive LPG and IS 12300 for small refrigerant cylinders. A valve is screwed into the neck and never permanently attached, and its spindle must not be withdrawable in normal use (Rules 4(5) and 4(6)).

In the thread code, G is a BSP-form fastening pipe thread, the letter A marks an external thread on the valve (no A means the valve outlet is an internal thread), and W is a Whitworth form. Outlets for gas mixtures and for CNG are settled between purchaser and manufacturer with the approval of the statutory authority.

Why the outlets differ, and where they do not

The scheme separates gases in four ways. The hand separates fuel from everything else: Rule 4(3) of the Gas Cylinders Rules 2016 requires left-hand outlets for flammable gases not listed in IS 3224, and Rule 4(4) right-hand for all others. The size separates oxygen, G5/8, from the inert gases, G3/4. The thread form separates the liquefied gases carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, on Whitworth threads, from the rest. And internal against external threads stop near-misses from mating.

Two shared outlets matter in practice. Outlet No. 2 is common to acetylene, hydrogen, methane and the other left-hand fuel gases, so a fuel-gas regulator will physically fit any of them even though its gauge range and materials may be wrong for the gas. Outlet No. 20 is common to argon, nitrogen, helium and the rare gases, so one regulator fits all six. On those cylinders the IS 4379:2021 colour and the label are the identification, and a flowmeter calibrated for one gas reads wrongly on another, as the regulator guide explains.

Left-hand threads and the notch

Any hexagon with a left-hand thread on the valve outlet, and any left-hand hexagon nut, must carry notches on its corners (IS 3224:2021 cl 9.1.2), so a fitter can tell the hand by eye and by feel. The one exception that surprises people is marine-lighting acetylene, which IS 3224 gives a right-hand G3/4 outlet, No. 1, with an 8.0 mm spindle square. The ordinary acetylene valve and its key are covered in detail on acetylene cylinder valves and keys.

Pin-index valves on medical cylinders

Small medical cylinders do not use threaded outlets. Rule 4(1) of the Gas Cylinders Rules 2016 sends them to IS 3745, a yoke-type connection in which the valve face carries holes in positions that differ by gas and the yoke carries matching pins. A yoke for one medical gas cannot seat on another gas's valve, so the wrong connection is impossible at the anaesthetic machine or the bedside. IS 3224:2021 expressly excludes pin-index valves. An adaptor that defeats the pins defeats the whole system and has no legitimate use; medical gas pipeline systems use the same logic with gas-specific terminal units.

Rules that matter

IS 3224:2021 classifies valves by their sealing: O-ring gland seal, diaphragm gland seal, compression-packed gland seal, pressure seal and ball valves, with soft or metal seats. Whatever the design, the user-facing rules are the same:

How a valve is built and operated

  • Closing direction Clockwise viewed from the spindle end (cl 6.4.1).
  • Torque Industry practice is a 7 N·m closing torque on a 65 mm handwheel, and 16 N·m is taken as the most achievable by hand (Table 2 notes). A valve that needs more is faulty.
  • Leak tightness Not over 6 cm³/h at NTP across the seat or at the gland, about four bubbles of 3.5 mm a minute, over −20 °C to +65 °C (cl 6.1.1, 6.6).
  • Endurance 2,000 opening and closing cycles at test pressure without replacing the seal (cl 6.3.3).

Materials follow the gas. Copper alloys in contact with oxygen or other oxidising gases may contain no more than 2.5 % aluminium (cl 5.2.2); nickel may not be used in gas-wetted parts for carbon monoxide, which forms nickel carbonyl (cl 5.2.3); and dissolved acetylene valves may contain no more than 70 % copper (Gas Cylinders Rules 2016, Rule 37(v)). Medical valves are nickel or chromium plated outside, with no plating on gas-wetted surfaces or threads (cl 5.5).

Safety devices by gas

Gas type Device on the valve Figure
Permanent gases Pressure relief device where fitted Minimum flow 0.00967 × water capacity, m³/min of free air at 6 kgf/cm² (cl 7.1.6)
Carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide Bursting disc, type BD to IS 5903 Bursts above the pressure the gas develops at 65 °C and not above the cylinder test pressure (cl 7.2.1); CO₂ disc 200–220 kg/cm² (Rule 4(2))
Dissolved acetylene Fusible plug Yields at 98 to 104 °C (cl 7.1.5)
CNG Bursting disc and fusible plug together In series or parallel (cl 7.2.3)
Toxic gases None permitted IS 3224 cl 7.3.1; Rule 5(2)

The reasoning for toxic gases is that a relief device would turn a fire into a toxic release, so the cylinder relies on its shell. On acetylene cylinders the fusible plugs are often in the cylinder as well as the valve; how they behave is on acetylene cylinder fusible plugs.

Inlet threads and marking

The valve screws into the cylinder neck on a taper thread: Type 1 at 1 in 16 on diameter (codes 08N, 12N), Type 2 at 3 in 25 (17E, 25E) or Type 4 at 1 in 8 (18T, 25.4, 32T). IS 3224:2021 Table 13 gives the fitting torque for a 25E stem in a seamless steel cylinder as 200 to 300 N·m with PTFE sealant, reduced to two-thirds for stainless steel valves. Valves are fitted and removed only by filling and testing stations, never by users.

Each valve is marked under cl 14.1 with its year and month of manufacture, batch, maker, IS 3224, working pressure, inlet code and outlet number, the bursting pressure or fusible-plug yield temperature of any relief device, and the gas name or symbol, which the user must punch if the maker has not.

Valve protection

Schedule VI of the Gas Cylinders Rules 2016 requires a valve that is not wholly below the cylinder's profile to carry a metal cap, cover, ring or grill in transport, vented except on highly toxic gases, with an exemption for medical oxygen and nitrous oxide cylinders up to 5 litres. For dissolved acetylene, IS 7312 cl 9.2 specifies a perforated steel cap at least 3.5 mm thick. The same Schedule forbids tendering or carrying a leaky cylinder at all; what to do when one leaks is on gas cylinder leak — what to do.

Rules that matter

Rules to apply

  • Match the regulator to the outlet number, then confirm the gas by colour and label.
  • Never use an adaptor between outlets, and never one that defeats a pin index.
  • Close clockwise, by hand only; a valve that will not seal at hand torque goes back to the filler.
  • Leave bursting discs and fusible plugs alone; never plug, paint over or replace them.
  • Keep the cap or guard on whenever the cylinder is moved, and no oil or grease on any valve (Rule 15(2)).

Gas cylinder valves — frequently asked questions

Which gas cylinders have left-hand threads in India?

Flammable gases. IS 3224:2021 Table 1 gives left-hand outlets to acetylene, hydrogen, methane, ethylene, carbon monoxide, coal gas, butadiene, dimethyl ether and isobutylene, among others, and Rule 4(3) of the Gas Cylinders Rules 2016 extends left-hand threads to any flammable gas not listed. Oxygen, argon, nitrogen, helium, air and carbon dioxide are right-hand. Left-hand nuts carry notches on their corners so the hand can be seen.

What is the outlet thread of an oxygen cylinder valve?

G5/8-14 TPI right-hand, outlet No. 3 in IS 3224:2021, an internal thread of 1.814 mm pitch with a 7.1 mm spindle square where the valve is key-operated. Acetylene and hydrogen use the same G5/8 size left-handed, outlet No. 2, so an oxygen regulator cannot be screwed onto a fuel gas cylinder. Medical oxygen cylinders use a pin-index valve to IS 3745 instead.

Are argon and nitrogen cylinder valves the same?

They have the same outlet. IS 3224:2021 assigns outlet No. 20, a G3/4A-14 TPI right-hand external thread, to argon, nitrogen, helium, neon, krypton and xenon alike. A regulator for one therefore fits all of them, which is why the cylinder colour under IS 4379:2021 and the label are the real identification: peacock blue for argon, French grey with a black shoulder and bottle-green band for nitrogen, middle brown for helium.

Why does a CO₂ cylinder valve have a bursting disc?

Because carbon dioxide is a liquefied gas whose pressure climbs steeply with temperature and can exceed the cylinder's safe limit if it is overheated or overfilled. IS 3224:2021 cl 7.2.2 requires a bursting disc of type BD to IS 5903 on carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide valves, and Rule 4(2) of the Gas Cylinders Rules 2016 fixes the CO₂ disc between 200 and 220 kg/cm². Never plug or replace it with a solid fitting.

Which way do you turn a gas cylinder valve to close it?

Clockwise, viewed from the spindle end, as IS 3224:2021 cl 6.4.1 requires. Industry practice is about 7 N·m of closing torque on a 65 mm handwheel, and about 16 N·m is taken as the most a hand can apply, so a valve that will not shut tight by hand is defective. Never use a bar, a hammer or a longer spanner.

How much leakage is allowed from a gas cylinder valve?

Not more than 6 cm³ per hour at NTP, internally across the seat or externally at the gland, under IS 3224:2021 cl 6.6. The standard puts that at about four bubbles of 3.5 mm diameter a minute in a leak-test liquid. Anything you can hear, smell or see as a steady bubble stream is far above it, and the cylinder should be closed, labelled and returned to the filler.

What is a residual pressure valve on a gas cylinder?

A valve with a built-in device that keeps a small positive pressure in the cylinder when it is emptied, so that air and moisture cannot flow back in and contaminate it. IS 3224:2021 excludes residual pressure valves from its scope; they have their own Indian standard, IS 18272:2023. They are common on high-purity and specialty gas cylinders, where back contamination would spoil the next fill.
