Why hydrogen leaks behave unlike any other gas and what to do about it

Hydrogen is specified by IS 1090, filled into seamless cylinders to IS 7285, painted signal red shade 537 with a left-hand valve thread, and retested every 5 years. Three properties make a leak hard to find: the flame is nearly invisible in daylight, it rises to ceiling level, and static alone will ignite it.

Three properties, and all of them make a leak harder to find

Most gas safety guidance transfers reasonably well from one gas to another. Hydrogen is where that stops being true. Three of its properties break the habits that keep people safe around everything else on site.

The flame is nearly invisible in daylight

A hydrogen fire produces almost no visible light and no smoke. A leak can be alight with nothing to see. People find hydrogen flames by walking into them — this is documented, and it is why you never sweep a suspected hydrogen leak with your hand.

Use soap solution, or a detector, or a broom handle held ahead of you. Never a flame, and never skin.

It rises immediately

Hydrogen is the lightest gas there is. It does not disperse gently at working height the way a heavier gas does; it goes straight up and collects under the ceiling.

That inverts the usual layout rules:

  • Ventilate at the highest point, not at floor level
  • Mount detectors at the ceiling. A detector at waist height — sensible for LPG, which pools low — will not find hydrogen until the room is badly gone
  • Watch for trapped pockets in roof structures, above false ceilings and in the tops of enclosures

Its ignition energy is very low

A static discharge from clothing is enough. Ignition sources you would reasonably dismiss around other gases are credible here.

Bonding, earthing and antistatic discipline are not precautions borrowed from other gases. With hydrogen they are the primary control.

The left-hand thread

Hydrogen is a fuel gas, so its fittings use a left-hand thread, usually with a notch cut into the nut so it can be identified by touch as well as by eye.

It exists for one reason: so that a fuel regulator cannot be married to an oxidising gas, or the reverse, by somebody working quickly at the end of a shift. If a fitting will not start, that is the system working. Never force it, and never use an adaptor to make one thread meet another.

Signal red means fuel gas, not hydrogen

Under IS 4379, hydrogen is signal red, shade 537, with no neck band. So are LPG, methane, propane and butane.

The colour tells you the cylinder holds a fuel gas — useful at a distance, dangerous to rely on up close. The stamped marking on the shoulder tells you which fuel gas you actually have. Read it before connecting a regulator rated for something else.

Practical rules

  • Store and use upright and secured, in a well-ventilated space, ventilated at the top
  • Segregate from oxidisers — oxygen and hydrogen stored together is the classic mistake
  • Bond and earth everything, including the operator where appropriate
  • Leak-test with soap solution only
  • Fit flashback arrestors on fuel-gas lines
  • Keep no ignition sources in the area, and treat static as one
  • Assume any enclosed space above a hydrogen installation may hold gas

Why is a hydrogen flame dangerous to look for?

Because it is nearly invisible in daylight. A hydrogen leak can be alight with nothing to see — no yellow flame, no smoke, no obvious heat shimmer at a distance. It is a documented cause of injury because the flame gets found by walking into it. Never sweep for a hydrogen leak with your hand or a flame; use soap solution or a detector.

Where should a hydrogen detector be mounted?

Read the stamped marking on the shoulder before connecting a regulator that may be rated for something else.

How often must a hydrogen cylinder be retested?

Every five years, hydrostatically, to IS 8451 — the same as other compressed gases. Dissolved acetylene is the exception at two years under IS 8433, because of its porous mass and solvent.
